Role and Responsibilities
As a climbing Coach, you will play a critical role in the development of climbers at all levels, offering performance-driven coaching that goes beyond simply teaching technique. You will be responsible for creating tailored training plans, coaching performance preparation, mental conditioning, and goal setting. You’ll offer individualized feedback and help clients track progress. You’ll provide expert guidance and support in both one-on-one and group coaching environments. We are looking for candidates with a strong coaching background. Ideal candidates will be familiar with various training methods for climbing, injury prevention strategies, and performance psychology, and will be motivated to work with athletes of varying skill and experience levels. Note: Tomo does not offer youth programs, or a youth climbing team, however, coaches will serve clients of all ages in accordance with facility age policies.
Coach clients in the physical, technical, and mental components of climbing
Consider clients’ goals, physical health, training age, and capabilities
Program training for both individuals and groups
Schedule clients independently, sometimes in collaboration with the Programs Manager
Manage the use of space and equipment, balancing the needs of clients and members
Maintain cleanliness and organization of training areas before, during, and after use
Stay informed about the latest research in climbing, fitness, and coaching to better support and guide clients
Learn and understand our offerings, including admission, membership, programming, and coaching, directing people to the best options for their needs and goals
Greet and assist visitors as needed
Check clients in for sessions and execute sales transactions
Solve, report, and/or escalate safety and maintenance issues
CPR/First Aid certification
Minimum Qualifications
2-5 years of experience coaching climbing and programming physical training (experience coaching competition climbing is a plus)
Demonstrated understanding of exercise science as applied to training for climbing
Understanding of exercise progressions and regressions for clients of different needs and abilities
Understand how to utilize training equipment safely
Ability to demonstrate and explain exercises and movements for different types of learners
Adaptability working with individuals and groups in a facility shared with other users
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients and company leadership
Effective time management and preparation tactics
Proficiency with basic computer applications and point-of-sale systems or comfortable learning new software (experience with Approach Climbing Gym Management software is a plus)
Ability to manage multiple clients simultaneously and sometimes under pressure
Comfortable engaging with people you don't know from different walks of life
Ability to work collaboratively and contribute to a positive work environment
Exercise or climbing certification(s) such as CPT, C4HP, ClimbStrong, or demonstrated equivalent knowledge and experience
